In addition to airing in New Zealand, the show has been sold to networks in England, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Australia, Slovenia and Croatia. It has also aired on the Australia Network, a cable channel that plays throughout South East Asia and the Pacific. ‘Outrageous Fortune is a comedy-drama series about the wrong sort of people trying to do the right thing when the rewards for going straight are neither immediate nor bountiful. It is a bold, fresh comedy-drama which is by turns bawdy, action-packed, satirical and trashy – but only ever a heartbeat away from reality’ the authors said.
The central plot is that a family of criminals decides to go straight after the father is jailed. Like the show itself, episodes take their names from Shakespeare quotations. The main characters each walk a fine line between right and wrong according to their respective values – the law, the criminal code of honor, loyalty to family, and respectability. Outrageous Fortune follows the trials and tribulations of the West family as they try and go straight after a life of petty crime. It’s a daily struggle as they discover that living life the right way isn’t always easy or rewarding, and that it’s a constant struggle to deny your true nature.
